NP Scope of practice in Maryland
The level of independence of practice: Maryland is one of the 10 states
that have a full practice authority and PMH/APRN may perform independently, autonomously, and in a variety of settings (
Kleinpell et al., 2023
). A graduate from an APRN program may practice under supervision for 24 months from the filing of all documents after certification (permission to practice as a PMH/APRN granted by the Board).
Prescribing authority:
In Maryland, medication prescriptions require a physician signature (or co-signature), but the pharmaceutical companies do not require physician signature for samples, NPs are able to order test samples without physician signature. Insurance in Maryland does not require a physician to be PCP, an NP is able to be the HCP in Maryland.
Limitations of practice: There are several limitations of practice to the APRN roles and authority such as Laboratory or imaging results being given only to collaborating/supervising physician (not to APRN), lack of hospital privileges; issues with provider credentialing; limited clinical, admitting, and/or staff privileges; insurance; and reimbursement issues. A nurse practitioner must consult and collaborate with a physician or nurse practitioner for the first 18 months of practice (
Kleinpell et al., 2023
)
Process for obtaining licensure in your state.
In the state of Maryland, an applicant for certification as a nurse practitioner shall obtain certification from the Board before commencing practice. The applicant upon completing the NP
program at master’s level or higher, will sit for the state license board examination conducted by the American Nurses Credentialing
Center (ANCC) and upon passing, will complete, in full, the application for certification as a nurse practitioner for each area in which certification is sought.
Documents needed by the Maryland board of nursing includes.
Documentation that the applicant has graduated from a Board-approved educational program for nurse practitioners
Documentation of certification as a nurse practitioner by a national certifying body recognized by the Board
Identification of a designated mentor for 18 months as defined in Maryland Regulation
Pay all fees established by the Board
Must hold a current national certification for each area of specialization in which certification is sought from the AANPNCB or other national certifying body recognized by the Board
Demonstrate written and oral competency in the English language.
Certification and education requirements for licensure.
To be a Nurse Practitioner (NP), once the nurse completes the NP program at the master's level, the next step is to pass the national NP certification board exam and get the NP license (
American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2020
). There are several specialties under the certified NP, including Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP), Adult-Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP), Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP), Family NP (FNP), Neonatal NP (NNP), Pediatric NP (PNP), Oncology NP (ONP), Women's Health NP (WHNP) (
American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2020
). How has an independent practice of the APN resulted in improved patient access to healthcare
?
Maryland is a full practice state. Being a full practice authority (FPA) state is very beneficial in terms of improved patient access to healthcare. For
instance, in rural and underserved areas, NPs are likely to thrive and help
