Introduction

Station Eleven is a near-future dystopian novel that takes place in a world where a global pandemic has eliminated 99 percent of the world’s population. It is told from three different points of view over three main time frames: 30 years before the pandemic, the night before the pandemic started, and approximately 20 years after the pandemic wiped out most of the population. Touching on such themes as survival and the importance of art, the novel intertwines the stories of an aging movie star, a young actress, and an aspiring paramedic. In the post-pandemic world, a band of artists and musicians travels through the Great Lakes region, performing Shakespeare and symphonies for survivors of the plague. Their motto: “Survival is insufficient.”
